1- Pena National Palace.  Considered one of the most impressive castles in the world, Palacio da Pena is one of the top reasons why tourists visit Sintra. The brightly painted palace was built at the behest of King Ferdinand II in 1842 and is a delightful mix of different styles and influences from designs, ranging from North African to medieval Gothic. The inside of the palace is just as interesting as its exterior, with 19th-century furniture in various Gothic Revival, Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque styles.

 

To travel to Pena Palace you can take bus 434 or walk on a steep and difficult hill, but with beautiful vegetation your adventure will surely be enjoyable. The palace is located across from the Moat Castle, which is why both monuments are often visited together. We expect you to spend 3 wonderful hours in the palace for the price of about 14 euros.

 

2. Moat castle.  The stunning fortress that can be seen in the center of Sintra, the castle is located on a rocky hill dating back to the eighth century, when the Muslims came to the Iberian Peninsula, although it was later occupied by the Portuguese rulers. The stone walls surrounding the castle and its massive towers are reminiscent of the Great Wall of China, with the same great views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Quinta da  Regaleira  Another building that seems to have come out of a fairy tale. Quinta da Regaleira is the favorite attraction for tourists coming to Sintra. This neo-Manuelin church was designed by the architect Luigi Mannini and is located just 700 meters from the town, accessible by bus or car.

 

The palace contains carved fireplaces, romantic statues, and various wall paintings. However, you will be impressed by the enchanting gardens. You will also find references to the Knights Templar, Freemasonry and other mysteries hidden in the grounds. Interestingly, the hidden passage that connects the many tunnels that all reach the palace gardens.

4. Sintra National Palace.  With conical baskets and a lavish interior, the Sintra National Palace is one of the most beautiful buildings in Portugal and one of the most visited tourist attractions around Lisbon. The interior design combines Moorish-style elements, with Arabic courtyards, twisted columns, and geometric tiles. The contemporary history of the palace dates back to 1385 when King John I ordered the complete reconstruction of the building. By 1880 the palace is being used by the royal family. Its attractions include the Pelican Room, the Cotsoffensive Hall, the Golden Room and the Arabian Room.

5. Monserrate Palace and Park. Not far from the historic center of Sintra (only 3.5 km away), a lush 30-hectare park with exotic trees, perfect for strolls on hot summer days, surrounds the impressive Palácio de Monserrate, built in the 19th century. With Moorish-style architecture, the palace presents an interesting blend of Gothic and Indian influences.
